National Breakthrough Project in the Field of Educational Sciences

At the 1st April of 2025, the Research Council of Lithuania (RCL) launched the project “Breakthrough in Educational Research” aimed at enhancing the potential of educational sciences, improving the quality of research, and increasing its practical applicability within the education system. The project is being implemented by seven universities: Vilnius University (VU), Vytautas Magnus University (VMU), Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Mykolas Romeris University (MRU), Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH), Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LUHS), and Klaipeda University (KU). Collaborative interdisciplinary research groups have been formed, comprising high-level scientists, doctoral students, and practitioners, including teachers.

Project Objectives: to foster high-level scientific activity in the field of educational sciences; to participate in international educational and pedagogical research; to improve the quality of educational research and its impact on policy formation; to promote networking among researchers, practitioners, and doctoral students.

Research Directions and Topics: a total of 28 research projects have been selected to address pressing educational challenges and to develop scientifically grounded recommendations for education policy and practice. These studies are divided into four main thematic areas: innovations in teacher training and schools; digital education and artificial intelligence; subject-specific professional development and student education; inclusive education, early childhood education, forms of lifelong learning, motivation and educational didactics.

“The Educational Breakthrough Forum” On 19 June 2025, the RCLhosted at Vilnius. The event brought together researchers and educational professionals to present and discuss the initial results of the ongoing projects, particularly in the fields of digital education, teacher training, inclusive practices, and adult learning. The forum aimed to promote dialogue between the academic community and practitioners and to highlight the potential impact of research on educational development.

The second EDU Forum, titled “Global Perspectives in Educational Research”is planned for 30 October 2026 and will be held at the RCL in Vilnius (Gedimino Ave. 3). This upcoming event will further extend the academic dialogue to an international context, encouraging reflection on the role of Lithuanian educational research in the global arena.
