EMBO Installation Grants Programme

European Molecular Biology Organization

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) is an organization of more than 2,100 scientists that promotes excellence in the life sciences in Europe and beyond. The organization's goals are to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, to stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and to help build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work. By closely following scientific trends, EMBO helps young scientists develop their research, promotes their international visibility, ensures their mobility, and contributes to the shaping of science and research policy1

In 2016, Lithuania became a member of the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC) and, by extension, of EMBO2. Since June 2019, it has also been a full member state of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)3. Lithuania is represented in EMBO by the Research Council of Lithuania (RCL), which ensures the fulfillment of financial obligations.

Since 2021, Lithuania has voluntarily participated in the EMBO Installation Grants Programme as a supplementary activity. The goal of the EMBO Installation Grants Programme is to strengthen the life sciences by supporting research group leaders who are establishing laboratories in the participating countries. For the 2025 call, grants are available in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal, and Turkey1

Decisions on Lithuania's participation are made by the RCL in accordance with the "Description of the Procedure for Funding the European Molecular Biology Organization's Installation Grants Programme," approved by the RCL Chairman's Order No. V-369 on October 7, 20212

EMBO Installation Grants are awarded to research group leaders for a period of three to five years. The total grant amount for a five-year period is determined by EMBO. Since 2021, the grant amount per recipient has remained unchanged at €50,000 per year, but the funding scheme, specifically the contribution amounts from EMBO and the RCL, has been revised. Typically, an annual payment of €35,000 is provided by the national funding agency of each participating country (the RCL in Lithuania) or the responsible ministry, while €15,000 is provided by EMBO's funding body, the EMBC1

Starting in 2025, EMBO/EMBC will contribute for the first three years of the grant period.

In addition to the financial support, grant recipients become part of the EMBO Young Investigator Network, which consists of over 700 current and former EMBO Young Investigators, Installation Grantees, and Global Investigators. The EMBO grant provides not only funding but also opportunities for networking, mentorship, training, and access to the core facilities at the EMBL headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany1
