The Council has a number of internal funding schemes to help researchers develop networks, prepare large and complex grant applications, enagge the public with their research and meet the costs of journal article publications. 

We recognise the importance of developing the next generation of researchers and are providing the support for doctoral students and Early Career Researchers through the Council's Postdoctoral Fellowship and PhD support schemes. 

In order to encourage students to engage in active scientific activities and enhance their scientific competence, the Lithuanian Research Council announces a call for applications to finance student research projects during the summer.

Information for students studying abroad

Students studying abroad can find an intership placement and a research supervisor in the following ways:

  • By finding your preferred research supervisor independently from publicly available information on the internet. We recommend that you contact your preferred research supervisor by sending him/her a letter enclosing your curriculum vitae (CV) and a motivation letter.
  • By writing directly to the Lithuanian Research Council and enclosing a completed cover letter to [email protected].

Project activities shall be implemented during the summer holidays: from July through August 2023.

Potential applicants

 

The application is submitted by the head of the research together with the executing authority.

Projects can be carried out by both first (bachelor) and second-cycle (post-graduate) students, as well as full-time students, with the exception of those who are in their final year at the time of application.

Projects can be carried out by students with a weighted average of 8.0 or above in all subjects studied in the last semester.

The research supervisor must hold a doctorate in science (art) or a recognised artist status.

A person can be named as the research supervisor or a student in only one application for this call.

The executing authority can be the Lithuanian institution of science and studies, which is included in the Register of Education and Science Institutions.

Criteria for the evaluation of projects

Assessment of projects in the fields of natural, technological, medical, health sciences and agriculture:

1.      the experience of the student's scientific activity is assessed: publications in scientific and/or information publications; presentations at scientific and/or informational events (from 2 to 20 points);

2.      the clarity of the scientific problem formulated in the project, the consistency, reasonableness and feasibility of the work plan are assessed (from 16 to 20 points);

3.      the student is currently studying at a foreign or other Lithuanian institution of science and higher education other than the executing authority (10 points).

Assessment of projects in the fields of humanities, social sciences and the performing and visual arts:

1.      the quality of preparation of a scientific (art) research project is evaluated based on the following criteria: the comprehensiveness of the description of the scientific (art) research topic, the disclosure of the problem, the justification of the future research methods, the comprehensiveness of the description of future student work, the soundness of the work plan, and the feasibility of achieving the goals within the allotted research time.; relevance of proposed scientific (art) research topics in the national and international context (from 15 to 30 points);

2.      the scientific (art) research activity accumulated by the student is evaluated based on the following criteria: publications in scientific, professional, cultural, or information publications; presentations at scientific, cultural, artistic, or information events; presentations of creative and artistic research; the student's activity in scientific (artistic) research, including presentations (readings) by students at national and/or international scientific conferences, scientific publications in student, local, or scientific press, and presentations of creative and/or artistic research in local, national, or international contexts; articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and/or non-peer-reviewed professional, cultural, and information publications (from 0 to 20 points);

3.      The student is currently studying at a foreign or other Lithuanian institution of science and higher education other than the executing authority. (10 points).

Additional information

Upon completion of the project, the executing authority submits to the Council a project activity report signed by the student and research supervisor, which describes the achievement of the goals and the implementation of the work plan during the student's research.

APC Fund enables Lithuanian researchers to publish scientific articles in a prestigious international journals and supports publishing of books and monographs.

The aim of this fund is to encourage Lithuanian science development, promotion internationally and level a playing field for Lithuanian researchers, enabling them to publish their research findings regardless of a financial situation.

The purpose of the activity is to support post-doctoral fellowship studies.

The Lithuanian Research Council, promoting the development of the system of internships for young scientists after doctoral studies and raising the scientific qualifications of interns, announces a call for proposals for the projects of posdoctoral studies.

Duration of the project

24 months. The start of the project implementation (the date of signing the project financing agreement) is no earlier than 15 January 2024.

Budget of the project

Up to EUR 100,000. Indirect costs can be up to 10 percent of  the amount of direct costs provided for in the project cost estimate. Funds must be planned for the entire duration of the project and for each calendar year. The research supervisor salary costs are not included in the project cost estimate.

Potential applicants

The application should be submitted by the host institution together with the reseach fellow. A person (research fellow and research supervisor) can be specified in the application only in case if on the last day of the call for proposals, the limitations for consideration of applications specified in points 76-80 of the general rules of competitive funding of research and dissemination projects of the Lithuanian Research Council do not apply to him. The research fellow and research supervisor can only be mentioned in one application for this call.

Host institution

Lithuanian science and study institution included in the Register of Education and Science Institutions. The host institution must be different from the one where the research fellow prepared the doctoral thesis.

Research fellow

Researcher who has a science (arts) doctorate degree awarded by a Lithuanian or foreign science and studies institution, and for whom no more than 5 years have passed from the date of the science (arts) doctoral dissertation defense to the date of the application submission deadline specified in the call fpr proposals (this period is extended 18 months (in the case of maternal pregnancy and childbirth, parental leave) for each child born before or after the date of obtaining the doctoral degree, upon presentation of the birth certificates of the child(s), or during a specific actual period, upon presentation of documents justifying pregnancy and childbirth, paternity leave or leave period(s) to look after the child(s)) and carrying out the scientific (artistic) research work provided for in the project.

Research supervisor

Scientist or artist working in the implementing institution, who during the implementation of the project leads the scientific (art) research work carried out by the research fellow. The postdoctoral project does not have to be supervised by the research fellows doctoral dissertation supervisor.

Application procedure

The application is submitted by filling out a form in the electronic system https://junkis.lmt.lt. The application is submitted in English.

The following attachments must be submitted together with the application:

1. A letter from the host institution regarding project implementation assurance (Lithuanian);

2. Documents required to assess the competence of research fellow:

2.1. a copy of the document certifying the degree of Doctor of Science or Arts;

2.2. curriculum vitae (in English);

2.3. lists of the most important scientific publications or art research papers (no more than 10) and other scientific or artistic productions (no more than 5) (with detailed bibliographic information, links to Clarivate Analytics Web of Science, Scopus or other database or publicly available source , which would allow checking the information provided (if such references are not available, copies of articles, monograph or study title and content pages, copies of artistic research output, information on the fact of registration of patents, plant or animal varieties, cell lines, microorganism strains are provided). Art research works can be indicated in accordance with, but not limited to, the Chairmen of the Lithuanian Research Council on 20 November 2019. November by order No. V-600 approved Exemplary list of possible productions of artistic research and dissemination projects in the fields of art (in English).

3. Documents required to assess the competence of the research supervisor:

3.1. a copy of a document confirming the degree of Doctor of Science or Arts or the status of a recognized artist;

3.2. a curriculum vitae containing, among other information, the experience accumulated in the last 10 years before the last date of the application submission deadline specified in the call, in the supervision of science or art PhD students and the experience accumulated in the last 5 years before the last date of the application submission deadline specified in the call, the experience accumulated in participating in scientific or art research projects and performing other scientific or artistic professional activities (in English);

3.3. a list of the most important scientific publications or art research papers published in the last 5 years (no more than 10) and other scientific or artistic productions (no more than 5) published before the last day of the application deadline specified in the call (with detailed bibliographic information, links to Clarivate Analytics Web of Science, Scopus or another database or publicly available source that would allow checking the information provided (if such links are not available, copies of articles, monograph or study title and content pages, copies of artistic research output), information on patents, plants or the fact of registration of animal breeds, cell lines, strains of microorganisms and other works) (in English). 4. Copy of documents regarding the grant of maternity leave, paternity leave or parental leave of the intern or the birth certificate(s) of the child(ren) (if applicable).

Evaluation procedure

Only applications that meet the requirements of administrative chech are submitted for expert evaluation.

The expert evaluation of applications is carried out in accordance with the description of the procedure for the expert evaluation of Projects and their reports approved by the Chairman of the Lithuanian Research Council, with the exception of the provisions regarding the following stages of expert evaluation: preparation of the initial summary evaluation of applications and the possibility for the research fellow to indicate actual errors in the evaluation of the application.

The applications are assessed in accordance with the general rules of the Lithuanian Research Council's experts and foreign expert commissions, whose leaders may be appointed by Lithuanian experts.

Additional information

During the implementation of the project, the research fellow must be employed in the position of researcher and/or researcher (in the case of the arts) and he/she must be assigned a salary coefficient according to the coefficient interval limits specified in Article 721, Part 5, Clause 5 of the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on Science and Studies. The total number of working hours of the intern in the project must be no less than and no more than 2010 hours (1 full-time position) during 12 months, including scientific and study institutions research workers are granted annual leave.

During the implementation of the project, the research fellow must go for an internship to a foreign science and study institution or research center, laboratory, company, institution, library, archive, expedition, etc. The minimum duration of the trip is 1 month. The departure period can be divided into parts, one of which must be at least 15 days.

The call funds are divided into as many parts as the groups of applications were made. These funds are distributed proportionally according to the funds requested by the projects of application groups that have met the requirements of administrative verification.

All applications will be divided into three parts:

1) applications in the fields of humanities and social sciences;
2) applications in the fields of stage and screen and visual arts;
3) applications in the fields of natural, technological, medical and health and agricultural sciences.

In each of these parts, the applications can be divided into groups of applications, taking into account the fields of science indicated in the applications and the topics of the projects.

After the announcement of the results of the call, the research fellows of the projects included in the list of funded projects, before signing the project financing contracts, must submit applications with identical content in the Lithuanian language in the electronic system https://junkis.lmt.lt (without the appendices specified in the conditions of this call). The projects will be coordinated according to the information provided in the application in Lithuanian.

If it is expected that data will be collected during the implementation of the project, after the announcement of the results of the call, the trainees of the projects included in the list of financed projects, before signing the project financing contracts, must submit the essential provisions of the data management plan in the electronic system http://junkis.lmt.lt in accordance with the Council's website presented Recommendations on the outline of the data management plan (DMP) for science and dissemination projects.

The aim of the promotional scholarships is to foster scientific and artistic initiatives of doctoral candidates, supporting their scientific and creative ideas, research and development activities. There are two types of funding available – doctoral scholarship and grants for (doctoral) academic visits.

The amount of funding for both schemes is determined annually, depending on a number and quality of submitted proposals, and the budget limit for the current year.

There are two types of candidates eligible for the funding:

  • PhD students in science, actively conducting scientific research – authors of published (or accepted for publishing) scientific papers;
  • PhD students in arts, actively conducting research and (or) creating and publicly presenting their works of art – authors of published (or accepted for publishing) or created and publicly presented works of art.

Calls for doctoral scholarship proposals are announced annually, while calls for grants for (doctoral) academic visits proposals take place twice a year.

The objective of financial support to research visits is to encourage Lithuanian researchers to improve their research competences, increase researchers’ mobility in general and aid the dissemination of research results.

This fund supports organisation and facilitation of research events and workshops in Lithuania. The Council will support the events and workshops, which contribute to the development of academic community and facilitates sharing of research ideas, analysis of important research questions and dissemination of research findings.

The objective of the measure of support to academic associations is to foster activities dealing with objectives of science and studies and their participation in solving definite problems of the development of science and studies.

The funding allocated to support academic associations is dedicated for activities related to science system only and requires the applicants to submit reasonable budgets, clearly defining applicable expenditures.

When evaluating the association activities the following factors are most important: the compatibility and coherence between association activities and the goals of Lithuanian science and studies system; association activities relevance to the Lithuanian science and studies development; continuity of the association and its activity as indicated in the project; the experience of an association in implementing projects. A special attention is also paid to the scope of association activities, its participation in international organizations, its visibility in national and international levels as well as the quality of the proposal itself, including validity of requested funding.
