Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and Research Council of Lithuania Sign Memorandum of Cooperation
On 22 September, the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (LAS) and the Research Council of Lithuania (RCL), building on their long-standing cooperation and seeking to consolidate and further develop relations based on mutual partnership, professional dialogue and shared interests of Lithuanian science, signed a bilateral Memorandum of Cooperation.
“This Memorandum is first and foremost an expression of goodwill and a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation. We believe that closer partnership between our institutions will enable us to pool expertise, contribute more constructively to shaping research policy, and work together towards more ambitious and sustainable research funding in Lithuania,” says Prof. Juozas Augutis, Acting Chair of the Research Council of Lithuania.
Pooling expertise
Under the Memorandum, the LAS and the RCL agreed to bring together the expertise and competencies of both institutions in addressing issues of importance to Lithuania’s research system. The partnership aims to contribute to enhancing the quality and international competitiveness of Lithuania’s research and higher education system, as well as the impact of research on the country’s development, economy, culture and societal well-being.
“Until now, the LAS and the RCL have cooperated on a range of issues important to Lithuanian science. The Memorandum provides a clearer long-term framework for this cooperation: it defines common areas of activity, forms and principles of cooperation, and establishes regular dialogue between the institutions,” says Vytautas Nekrošius, President of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.
A shared focus – from early-career researchers to artificial intelligence
The Memorandum also places strong emphasis on early-career researchers and the attractiveness of research careers. The institutions will work together to support the development of early-career researchers, foster scientific leadership and attract talent. They will also jointly advance science communication and public engagement, strengthen public trust in science, and promote public participation in science-informed decision-making.
The LAS and the RCL will also cooperate in the areas of open science, research ethics, academic integrity, open access, and the responsible use of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence. The partnership will further seek to increase the international visibility of Lithuanian science, strengthen the country’s representation in international scientific organisations and expert networks, and mobilise scientific potential to advance research, technology and innovation priorities of strategic importance to Lithuania.
The Memorandum enters into force on the date of signature and remains in effect indefinitely.
