Prospects for cooperation between Lithuania and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in the life sciences

Last week, on 19-22 September, representatives of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) - Dr Gilles Bonvento, Director of the Laboratory of Neurodegenerative Diseases, and Dr Emmanuel Brouillet, Head of European and International Relations at the Institute of Biology - visited Lithuania. The visit of the representatives of one of the world's largest and most important research centres, organised by the Research Council of Lithuania (LMT) and the Embassy of Lithuania in France, is a significant and important step in the partnership for the implementation of joint research projects in the field of life and health sciences.

The French scientists visited the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, the Vilnius University Life Sciences Centre and the Faculty of Medicine, and the Centre for Innovative Medicine, where they toured the most advanced laboratories in our country, and interacted with the scientists working there in the fields of gene editing, neurobiology, and neurology. The round table discussions focused on the prospects for cooperation, in particular the identification of potential partnerships in cutting-edge research.

"I am glad that during this visit we discussed with CNRS representatives the prospects of close cooperation and some concrete steps in the future, such as periodic meetings between CNRS and Lithuanian research institutes in the field of neuroscience. I hope that the partnership with CNRS will open new opportunities not only for our scientists, but also for scientists from other countries to conduct innovative research in the field of life and health sciences in Lithuania, and that the experience and expertise of CNRS in the implementation of the latest research technologies and their application in practice will allow us to achieve even more effective results in the early diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases," says Dr. Gintaras Valinčius, the Chairman of the Research Council of Lithuania.

This visit of CNRS representatives is a continuation of Lithuania's previous cooperation with the organisation: last year, a symposium on life sciences was organised between Lithuanian and CNRS scientists; at the beginning of this year, Lithuanian scientists visited the CNRS life sciences laboratories in Bordeaux, and in June, the Chairman of the LMT, Dr. Gintaras Valinčius, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to France, Nerijus Aleksiejūnas, had a meeting with the CNRS Director of the Institute of Biology, Dr. André Le Bivic, and the Director of European and International Relations, Mr. Emmanuel Brouillet.
