RCL has become an affiliated member of the European University Association Council for Doctoral Education
The Research Council of Lithuania (RCL) has become an affiliated member of the European University Association Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE). This step strengthens the RCL’s international cooperation on matters related to doctoral education—the first stage of a researcher’s career—and opens new opportunities for exchanging experience with institutions across Europe that develop and implement advanced doctoral education models.
In Lithuania, the RCL performs important functions aimed at strengthening the doctoral education system: it periodically evaluates the quality of doctoral studies carried out by universities and research institutes, and each year allocates part of competitive funding to support and enhance doctoral education. In fulfilling its advisory role, the RCL provides recommendations for improving the national doctoral education system to ensure that doctoral studies in Lithuania are competitive, attractive to talent, and aligned with international quality standards.
Becoming an affiliated member of EUA‑CDE is a consistent step by the RCL in expanding international dialogue on issues related to the first stage of a research career. EUA‑CDE membership provides opportunities for more active participation in European discussions on the development of doctoral education, quality assurance, and the strengthening of early‑stage researchers’ competencies, as well as for sharing experience with institutions shaping doctoral policy and practice. It also contributes to enhancing the RCL’s evaluation, funding, and advisory activities by drawing on international insights and trends.
EUA‑CDE brings together nearly 300 institutions from 39 European countries that work on issues related to doctoral education and early research careers, fostering cooperation, exchange of experience, and dialogue on the quality and development of doctoral education in Europe.
In Lithuania, universities and universities jointly with research institutes offer 88 science and 5 arts doctoral programmes, with more than 2,800 doctoral candidates enrolled.
