RCL Launches Call for Personalised Medicine Research
Human health is shaped not only by a diagnosis, but also by genetic, biological, lifestyle, environmental and other individual factors. Modern medicine is therefore increasingly moving away from one-size-fits-all solutions towards more precise disease prevention, earlier diagnosis and healthcare solutions tailored more closely to each individual.
To strengthen Lithuania’s research capacity in this field, the Research Council of Lithuania (RCL) is launching the first call for proposals under the targeted programme Personalised Medicine for Longer Life Expectancy and Better Quality of Life. Approximately EUR 1 million in state budget funding has been allocated to projects to be implemented between 2026 and 2029.
From Understanding Disease Mechanisms to More Precise Healthcare Solutions
The call will fund projects focused on comprehensive research into the causes and mechanisms of disease. The projects are expected to contribute to the development of evidence-based solutions for personalised disease prevention and diagnosis, as well as to establishing the foundations for healthy lifestyles based on the principles of personalised medicine.
Personalised medicine is one of the fields in which research can directly contribute to the advancement of the healthcare system. It brings together clinical practice, data science, biobanks, public health and health technologies. This research area is important not only for generating new knowledge, but also for translating it into practice—from more accurate disease risk assessment to clinical recommendations and new diagnostic solutions.
“Personalised medicine is a field that requires sustained dialogue between research, clinical practice and data analysis. The better we understand the causes and mechanisms of disease, as well as the individual factors affecting health, the stronger the foundation we will have for more precise prevention and diagnosis. This call is particularly important because it encourages the pooling of expertise from different fields and the development of solutions that could eventually be applied in healthcare practice,” says Prof. Vilmantė Borutaitė, Chair of the RCL Committee of Experts in Natural and Technical Sciences.
Focus on Both Research Quality and the Application of Results
The call emphasises that funded projects must focus not only on generating new scientific knowledge, but also on its potential for practical application. The activities planned under each project must contribute to at least four of the quantitative indicators set out in the Programme.
Potential project outcomes include the implementation of personalised medicine innovations, the preparation of recommendations for clinical application or the revision of clinical protocols, the initiation of preclinical studies, and the reuse of health data sets, open databases or biobank samples. Expected outputs may also include high-quality scientific publications, patent applications, presentations at international scientific conferences and public communication activities.
Call Open to Research and Higher Education Institutions and University Hospitals
Applications may be submitted by Lithuanian research and higher education institutions included in the Register of Education and Research Institutions, as well as by university hospitals. The project leader must be a researcher.
Funding of up to EUR 250,000 may be awarded per project, and the project duration may not exceed 36 months.
